About

Dear Delegate

On behalf of the Organising Committee I would like to invite you to attend Geoanalysis 2009.  What will be the 7th in the series of Geoanalysis conferences is to be held from 7 to 11 September 2009 at a venue in the 3000 meter high Drakensberg Mountains of KwaZulu-Natal Province in South Africa.

As a country with a large mining and mineralogical industry, as well as strong geological and geochemical research initiatives, it is highly appropriate to host a conference focussing on analytical chemistry in the earth science fields. We plan to supplement the international contributions with a showcase of South African examples of geochemical applications in earth sciences and simultaneously provide South African analysts with exposure to cutting edge research from the rest of the world.  It would also be a wonderful, and affordable, opportunity to expose young scientists and students from southern Africa to both the local as well as the international geoanalytical environment.

The organising committee, comprising members from the two host organisations; the South African Spectroscopic Society and the Mineralogical Association of South Africa, together with others from the analytical geoscience community, has endeavoured to put together a relevant and stimulating scientific program, balanced with ample time for informal networking between scientists and equipment exhibitors.

A provisional program is compiled including as topics Geochronology, Environmental geochemistry, Mapping and Regional Geochemistry, Certified Reference Materials, Education, Industrial Processes and Ore Beneficiation, Quality Control, Representative Sampling, Sample Preparation and Forensics.

Plenary and Invited lectures will be accompanied by submitted papers.  Workshops are planned on Representative sampling, Quality assurance and other topics.  Pre-and post conference excursions are planned to give the delegates additional opportunity to see and experience the country.

Hope to see you here.

Maggi Loubser

Chair: Organising Committee

Dear Colleague,

September 2009 and the Geoanalysis 2009 conference are fast approaching and, as president of the International Association of Geoanalysts, I would like to extend the warmest of invitations to all analytical geochemists to attend this meeting.  Geoanalysis 2009 will spotlight the latest developments from across the spectrum of analytical tools available for the chemical characterization of geomaterials.  Since its inception some two decades ago, the triennial Geoanalysis conference series has established itself as a pre-eminent forum for communicating new laboratory methodologies, progress in the production and characterization of new reference materials and the latest concepts in quality assurance and data handling.

The core mission of the IAG is the advancement of the geoanalytical sciences through our support of the professional interests of the analytical geochemist.  A primary vehicle for achieving this goal is our support of the Geoanalysis conference series.  Along with our partner organizations – the South African Spectroscopic Society and the Mineralogical Association of South Africa – great efforts are underway to assure the success of the coming conference.  The selection of South Africa as the venue for the Geoanalysis 2009 was based in-part on the nation’s highly active geoanalytical community and in-part on South Africa’s top level infrastructure which will be key for hosting a successful conference.  Significantly, the 2009 conference will be held in a resort-like setting in the 3000 meter Drakensberg Mountains of KwaZulu-Natal.  This venue was carefully selected so as to assure an informal environment which will encourage the exchange of ideas and the development of personal contacts, both of which have been hallmarks of previous Geoanalysis conferences.  I believe that delegates to past meetings concur, one of the greatest benefits of Geoanalysis meetings are the personal contacts which one establishes with other laboratories from across the globe.

I am personally looking forward to welcoming the many delegates to next year’s conference and to a lively exchange of concepts about how we might all further advance geochemical metrology.

With Warmest Regards

Micheal Wiedebeck
President of the International Association of Geoanalysts
